How to raise your CRS score for Express Entry
Last updated September 20, 2026
The biggest CRS jumps usually come from better language scores, French skills, a provincial nomination (+600 points), and Canadian education or work experience. But the score you need depends on which draw you are eligible for, so check your category before you chase points.
What your CRS score is made of
Your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score is out of 1,200. Most of it comes from core factors: age, education, language ability and work experience. If you have a spouse or partner, their profile adds points too. Skill transferability combinations and a few additional-point categories make up the rest.
The fastest ways to add points
-
Improve your language scores. Retaking an English test (IELTS or CELPIP) or a French test (TEF or TCF) to move up even one level is often the cheapest way to gain points, because language touches several parts of the score.
-
Add French. French skills earn bonus points on top of your core language points, and French-category draws in 2026 have had much lower cut-offs than other draws.
-
Get a provincial nomination. A nomination adds 600 points, which usually puts you ahead of everyone else in the pool.
-
Build Canadian education or work experience. A Canadian study credential adds points, and one year of skilled work in Canada opens the Canadian Experience Class.
-
Check the smaller items. An ECA for foreign study, your partner's language test, and a sibling who is a citizen or permanent resident in Canada can add points. IRCC removed points for arranged employment in March 2025, so a job offer no longer adds CRS points by itself.
Which score do you actually need?
There is no single number. Most 2026 draws are by category, and cut-offs differ. As of September 20, 2026, the supplied research listed: French-language proficiency (August 19): 382; Healthcare and Social Services (September 4): 475; Canadian Experience Class (September 1): 521; Senior Managers with Canadian experience (September 16): 389.
If you fit a category, that category's score is the one to watch. Cut-offs move with every round, so check IRCC's latest draw results.
