How long does Express Entry actually take in 2026?
Last updated September 20, 2026
Most people should plan for 12 to 18 months from creating a profile to holding a PR card. The part IRCC publishes, from a complete application to a decision, is about 6 to 7 months in 2026. The least predictable part is waiting for your invitation.
The timeline, stage by stage
| Stage | Typical time, as of September 2026 |
|---|---|
| Create a profile and wait for an ITA | From the next draw to 12 months or more. It depends on your CRS score and whether you fit a category. |
| Submit after an ITA | Up to 60 days. Well-prepared applicants often need only a few weeks. |
| IRCC processing | About 6 months for Federal Skilled Worker and about 7 for Canadian Experience Class, based on the supplied spring 2026 figures. |
| PR confirmation and card | PR status is confirmed first. The physical card usually arrives within a couple of months. |
When the 6-month clock actually starts
IRCC's clock starts when it receives your complete application, not on the day of your ITA and not when you pay. If your application is returned as incomplete, the clock starts again when you resubmit. Published times reflect how long it took IRCC to process 80 percent of recent applications, so treat them as a planning estimate, not a deadline.
What slows things down
Missing documents, requests for additional documents, background and security checks, expired medical exams, and a job category that does not match your real duties. Many are avoidable with a careful first submission.
How to check the current time
IRCC updates its processing times tool regularly. Check it before you plan around any number you read online, including this one.
